The Green Mosque
During a networking lunch organised on 18 Aug 2018, a distinguished invited
speaker, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, who was then Member of Parliament of Jalan Besar
GRC and former Minister in-charge of Muslim Affairs, challenged JEN to publish
a guidebook for the development of environmental-friendly, sustainable, and
‘smart’ mosques in Singapore. JEN took up the challenge and gathered
engineers and practitioners from the industry, on a voluntary basis, to form a
working team to develop such a guidebook based on their expertise, experience,
and industry best practices. JEN is proud that after several years of work, in
between the busy work schedules of the working team members, we finally
managed to publish this guidebook, called The Green Mosque, in honour of the
iconic green dome of Masjid Nabawi of Madinah (The Prophet’s Mosque). This
publication was prepared within the context of development of mosques in an
urban and densely populated city of Singapore. However, the general principles
of environmental-friendly, sustainable and with the use of smart technology
included in this guidebook would also be relevant and applicable to the
development of mosques in general. JEN hopes this guidebook would be a live
document that over time would be further revised and enhanced through the
contributions, collaborations, feedback and sharing of ideas and experience of
engineers and technologists from other parts of the world and would be a useful
reference book for the Muslim Ummah.
